Truth: Animal Humane Society is eager to provide affordable services to people in the community who currently can’t afford access to services at private veterinary practices. Unfortunately, Minnesota law* has requirements that make it difficult for us to practice veterinary medicine for animals owned by the public. This means we currently can’t directly offer low-cost spaying or neutering services to the public.
However, we understand that it would be in society’s best interest—and certainly in the best interest of the animals—for there to be more low-cost options available to pet owners. That is why we formed a partnership in 2011 with a private practice veterinarian which allows us to offer a subsidized spay/neuter program for the public that meets all legal requirements.
In partnership with private veterinarian Dr. Meghann Kruck, Animal Humane launched Kindest Cut, a high quality, low cost spay/neuter service for pets of people in need. Services are geared to pet owners with limited incomes in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area who do not have the resources to sterilize their animals. Surgeries are performed by licensed veterinarians who are skilled at small animal care, with fees ranging from $40-100 depending on the gender and species.
Kindest Cut and Animal Humane Society launched the program in May 2011. More than 4,500 spay/neuter surgeries were performed in the first seven months on Kindest Cut’s mobile surgical unit. Additional funds are currenty being raised through our Bound for Home initiative to create a community clinic at our Golden Valley shelter.
In addition to providing low-cost spay/neuter services, we have developed a list of other providers offering low-cost veterinary services to the public.
